  3. Annually — full strategy review: did the satellites earn their risk? Are the funds still the cheapest way to hold those markets?

Three design rules make this work:

  1. Decision info above the fold — drift and total return live at the top; everything else is secondary. If the most important number is below a scroll, you will not look at it.
  2. One number per panel — a panel that mixes prices, yields, and charts communicates nothing. Each panel answers exactly one question.
  3. Alerts are a panel, not a sidebar — threshold breaches deserve the same visual weight as the portfolio value, because they are the only part of the screen that should make you act.

The Data Flow, End to End

A robust setup runs on a daily cadence: a scheduled job (cron or a cloud function) pulls closing prices and NAVs at market close, reconciles against your transaction log, recomputes weights and drift, and regenerates the page — then, only if a threshold is breached, sends one alert. The whole pipeline is four small pieces, and each piece is independently testable. When something looks wrong, you check the log of the fetch step first; nine times out of ten, it is a data source hiccup, not your portfolio.

The 10-Minute Weekly Review Checklist

The dashboard’s payoff is a review you can do in ten minutes, every week, without fail. The checklist:

  • Alerts reviewed — every alert this week was either acted on or consciously deferred.
  • Drift checked — any asset class past your rebalancing threshold? If yes, the rule says trade; log the reason either way.
  • Dividends recorded — distributions received matched what the data predicted.
  • Data sanity — any implausible values? A 40% single-day move on a broad ETF is a data bug, not a market event.
  • One decision made — even if the decision is “no action,” write it down. A portfolio managed by written decisions is a portfolio with a strategy.
